Lillian Denbeigh’s wedding-ring-patterned “encouragement quilt,” a bridal shower gift from her mother’s missionary society friends, comes with their promise of daily prayers. And does Lillian ever need them!

The hardships encountered on the trek west are enough to make a girl question her faith—and her sanity. And Lillian does both. When her world falls apart, God’s grace (and her quilt) comes to the rescue—restoring her to life and love; giving her a future and a hope—Hope Orphanage.

Quilt of Grace edition by Joyce Brandt Williams Religion Spirituality eBooks

With her novel, 'Quilt of Grace', Joyce Williams has surely joined the fellowship of such Christian fiction writers as Jan Karon, Beverly Lewis, and Debbie Macomber. Based on the accounts of actual pioneers, including her own husband's great-grandparents, Ms. Williams has written a narrative which delves deeply into the psyche of a young idealist whose limited experiences have left her ill-prepared for life on the trail.

Lillian Cartwright exchanges a life of Eastern privilege for the rigors of a life on the trail when she marries Philip Denbeigh, a young preacher with dreams of sharing the gospel with pioneers out west. Tedium gives way to catastrophe, and Lillian struggles to maintain her sanity as her faith in God slips with every mishap along the way. Comforted by a quilt which was given with the promise of prayers from the ladies back home, Lillian holds onto hope until the frayed edges of her nerves unravel.

'Quilt of Grace' illustrates the full-force consequences of believing a lie and acting out of the ensuing bitterness. It also demonstrates the power the truth can wield when we allow it to penetrate our hearts and lead us to repentance. With more than a few surprising plot twists and a fair amount of touching romance, 'Quilt of Grace' is a story about innocence lost and regained.

Quilt of Grace edition by Joyce Brandt Williams Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

When Joyce portrays the history of these pioneer years and the journey that these characters traveled, it's like it all was or could be true of my grandparents during that time. The drama and action begin right off in chapter one. Can you image this young man and woman, fresh from their marriage ceremony, being #35 of 65 wagons traveling from Independence, Mo to the West Coast? They are planning to start a church in Oregon.

In the midst of this adventure, the beauty, challenges and hardships, bring individuals and families together. The story line is very compelling and true to portray the heart and soul of typical people and how their relationships become stronger, weaker or even divided. Anger, resentment, jealousy and seeming loss of faith in God brings questions to the reader as a mystery is developing.
My cup runneth over as Ed Ames sang.
I have five large stacks of books to be read and/or read again. Books I treasure, have recently purchased or been given me by friends and family.
Books of adventure, science, art, religion, history, biography, philosophy, politics, comics, sports, journalism horror, law and more by Ayn Rand, Ann Coulter, Christopher Hitchens, Mickey Spillane, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Dolly Parton, Margaret Thatcher, Lee Child, Sam Walton, Thomas Sowell and many others.
One theme running through many, most or all of these books is hope and courage.
One in particular has caught and held my attention, one I will return to again and again.
If you have read and liked any of the fine books by Louis L'Amour, James Mitchener and Jackie Collins, you may enjoy Quilt of Grace by Joyce Williams as much as I have. Perhaps even more.
But.
Do yourself a big favor. Do not read any reviews or editorial notes on the back cover of this beautiful book.
What is in Quilt of Grace, you wonder?
Here you will meet men and women facing anxiety, confusion, death, depression, horror, jealousy, danger, grief, tears and fear,
"God, where are You?"
Stay with Joyce and her characters for hope, patience, courage, trust, comfort and love and more surprises than you can shake a stick at.
And do not peek at the last few pages.
Highly recommended.
Loved the story. Even when we feel that God has forsaken us. He. Is always there to hear our cry and sees our tears. I knew Jack and Lillian would end up together I would never imaged it happening like it did. It had enough going on to keep coming back for the next chapter. I ordered the book because I love stories about quilts. Hope to read next book by Joyce Williams .
A wonderful story based on true experiences. I loved it!
Lovely story. Well written. A story of history, learning about life and hardship, and with God's help, a second chance.
Thanks Joyce for writing a book with positive morals that was also interesting and captivating. The characters were well developed, the story was believable and the quilt references was a fun way to tie it all together. Looking forward to more from this author.
I have just finished reading Quilt of Grace and absolutely loved it. It had me enthralled from start to finish. What a wonderful story and so skillfully written. I experienced every one of the emotions stitched into the quilt of grace and so much more as the story unfolded. The account of redemption and forgiveness was beautifully expounded. I found this book absolutely delightful and would recommend it to all ages. I would love to read more from this very talented author!
